It doesn’t look that difficult to be a parent until you have children, and doing it alone is harder than you can imagine. Yet, today, as single parent households become almost as common as two parent households, people are by necessity finding ways to adjust. Financial challenges are one of the key problems for single parents. After living in a two income household it can be hard to transition to bringing a child up with one income. The best approach is to squarely face your situation by creating a realistic budget that takes into account all of your expenses. Often, you may have to deal with great changes such as moving to an apartment or smaller home or moving to a less affluent area. Use coupons, buy in bulk and buy used items to save money whenever possible. While we don’t always want to use these techniques, it is preferable to be able to pay all of your bills.
It is important to maintain a harmonious and civil relationship with your “ex” if they continue to interact with you child. Nothing is worse for a child than having two parents who are constantly saying terrible things about the other to the child. Buying gifts and other items should not be used as a competition between you and your ex. Say as little to you children as possible if you have nothing positive to say about your ex. Consider that even if there is cause, it will not help them to hear griping and blaming. Remember that without them, this child would not exist.
Dating as a single parent has its own set of challenges, and that is why many people never move beyond being a single parent. Children getting in the way of dating, has always been a concern for single parents. This is less of a problem today, because there are more single parents, and it is more acceptable. Single parents spend a lot of time at places where there are other children, so not the best places to meet people. There are many places where you can meet people, like bookstores, museums, libraries, coffee houses, and other places that children are welcome, but it still could be possible to meet someone when you pick your child up from school, or at the playground or park, or even at the doctors office.
Though it doesn’t make it any easier to handle, being a single parent nowadays is not an uncommon situation. While there will often be challenges, don’t let them overwhelm you and try to stay positive. Your life as a single parent will be easier if you use the guidelines we have presented.
