What Are The Dangers Facing Children In Cyberspace?

The Internet is like a vast city – full of virtual shops, museums, theaters and recreational activities. But like real cities, there are certain places online that children shouldn’t visit alone.

Children aged 10 to 17 years who are regular users of the internet were the subject of a study by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children with results that are disturbing to say the least.

Twenty percent of children are subjected to indecent proposals in the Internet;

About one third will be the target of persistent efforts by ill-meaning individuals to convince them into a meeting by means of trickery, inducements and threats;

Twenty five percent are exposed to sexually explicit pictures and videos of couples engaged in the sex act;

One in 17 kids will be bullied and harassed online; and

Of incidents of sexual propositions and explicit sexual acts, only 10 and 3 percent respectively will be reported to the authorities.

Another study conducted by the Crimes Against Children Research Center warns that young girls more than the boys will probably be more susceptible and thus exposed and fall victim to sexual exploitation with most incidents happening in Internet chat rooms and social forums and websites.

Unfortunately, most parents know less about computers and the internet than their kids and are therefore not in the position to control and supervise the web activities of their kids without help. Pooling the knowledge of its national network of certified technicians, Geeks On Call has developed a special program known as “Kids Club” that offers educational materials to parents and schools to help promote Internet safety for children.

The main feature of the Kids Club program is the “Parents’ Guide to Internet Safety”, a free publication that aims to provide parents with easy to understand suggestions and means of safeguarding the welfare and interests of their kids in the Internet world. This publication actually teaches about the personal safety of children online, and the proper and safe use of computers.
