Understanding Children’s Shyness

How to explain shyness?

Liz is outside the mess hall. The mess hall hums with the noise of students who have gone before her, eating their lunches or talking. Liz was afraid that people would look at her, so she hung outside, trying to muster the courage to enter. The more she tries however the more she gets nervous and her feet seems rooted to the ground. Finally, she turns back.

Shyness during childhood years.

Shy children like Liz suffer from “approach avoidance conflict.” It means that they do want to approach others, but at the same time, are too afraid to do so. She does not know what to stay or is worried she will be saying the wrong things because she lacks socializing experience and cannot make the right approach. What happens is that the child who is shy will have little social skill and may be thought of as dull and slow to understand or learn. So the shy child’s low confidence in himself will grow worse and aggravate the problem. During later childhood and adolescence shyness becomes increasingly associated with loneliness, depression, social anxiety, and low self-worth.

The shy ones may feel tiny in relation to others, or wish to disappear all together.

Are children born shy or did they just develop it? Both.

There are families who are inherently shy. About one fifth of the babies are born with a tendency for shyness.

On the other hand, a child’s shyness may be attributed to circumstances and incidents like bullying or rejection that made a child doubt his worth and self importance.

The changing social and family environments.

A child may be kept or opt to stay at home for many reasons because the streets are not safe, the lure of TVs and computers, etc., which limits the child’s opportunity to hang out and meet people. These changes which may also be a convenient for a shy person may also enhance his shyness.

How to remedy the situation?

It is the job of parents to emphasize the child’s good points in order to boost his confidence level. It is not good to rein in the child with negative thinking; instead he should be encouraged to participate in communal activities. Mutual activities such as reading together Children’s educational books about shy children and how they cope is another good way.

Their own moments of embarrassment and bad experiences as children should not deter them from helping the child. Love your children for what they are.
